5 rescued, 6 missing as vehicle plunges into Ganga River amid heavy rains in Uttarakhand

Five of the 11 passengers were rescued after the vehicle skidded down a hill at Gular in Tehri district, Uttarakhand. 

A search operation is underway for six other passengers, the State Disaster Response Force said.

According to reports, the accident took place on the Srinagar-Badrinath highway. The vehicle crashed into the Ganges River. Rescue operations are underway.

The accident occurred during heavy rains in northern India. Many rivers in the hilly areas are overflowing and many roads have been closed due to the rains. In fact, in a surprising development, Losar in Lahul-Spiti received unseasonal snowfall on Today.

The railway track on the Kalka-Shimla route was also closed following heavy rains. The administration is yet to say anything about the accident in Uttarakhand.

An orange warning has been issued in Kumaon for heavy rains.
